Professional Development and Support Opportunities
We provide professional development opportunities in various modalities and formats
in order to accommodate the different stages of your academic career and complexities
of life outside of the university. There are multiple different event categories
that we offer ranging from micro-workshops to faculty retreats. We encourage you to
explore the calendar of upcoming events and learn more about all the events we offer.

Our most common category of event. These are longer sessions that typically begin
with an explanation of a key concept, approach, or technique in teaching followed
by some form of group activity or discussion that dives more deeply into the content.
Sessions are typically offered as either in-person or virtual.
These abridged sessions are usually no more than 30 minutes and aim to provide content
that can lead to small but impactful changes in your teaching that are easy to implement.
Many (but not all!) of these are what we refer to these as our Small Changes Advancing
Learning (or SCALe) workshops. Micro-workshops are often in a virtual format for ease
of access, but they are also periodically offered as in-person workshops.
Periodically, CTE will put together focus groups composed of faculty from all the
different schools and career stages (e.g., non-tenure track, tenure-track, tenured).
Recently, focus groups have been formed to discuss inclusive teaching at Duquesne
as well as develop resources for navigating and conducting peer evaluations of teaching.
CTE organizes annual retreats that provide faculty time to get away from work and
home obligations to engage in an exchange of ideas, take time to reflect, and be inspired
in our calling. Keep an eye on our calendar and look our for email announcements in
the Spring semester for more information about this opportunity.
CTE's annual event that provides us, and the Duquesne community, a chance to celebrate
the incredible teaching accomplishments of our faculty and graduate students. This
event is usually held near the end of the Spring semester each academic year.
At the beginning of each academic year, CTE hosts an orientation event for new full-time
and part-time faculty as well as graduate student teaching assistants. We also provide
asynchronous orientations for those hired in the middle of the academic year.
